Richard Green Ecology has obtained the first dormouse mitigation annex licence issued under Natural England’s recently introduced new system of European protected species licence application.
The licence was granted for work to a hedge along the Exeter Airport access road, which is being widened by Devon County Council. Dormouse nest tube survey over the summer had revealed low numbers of dormouse at one end of the hedge.
The application was challenging, given time constraints on funding and programme, and working in the dormouse breeding season. Liaison with Natural England at an early stage enabled a satisfactory mitigation plan to be put in place and the licence to be granted in time.
