Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) ensures that habitats are left in a measurably better state than they were prior to development. Since 12th February 2024, BNG is a mandatory component of planning permission (with some exemptions) and developers must now be able to demonstrate that the biodiversity value of a site will be improved by at least 10% – a ‘net gain’ – by creating or enhancing habitats and securing these for 30+ years.

BNG can be achieved either on site or off site, or both. Developers can also purchase statutory biodiversity credits if it is not possible to enhance or create habitats on or off site, although this is a last resort.

Calculating biodiversity value

To establish if there will be a net gain or loss, the biodiversity value of the site’s existing and post-development habitats are measured in biodiversity units, the number of which will depend on the size, quality, location and type of habitats present. Following a survey of the site to assess the habitats present, along with their condition, the Statutory Biodiversity Metric tool is used to compare the existing value of the site with the proposed BNG measures that will be delivered.

We can undertake a Biodiversity Metric calculation for your site and advise on measures that you can take to achieve a 10% net biodiversity gain.

BNG documentation

We are experienced in producing the necessary documentation that local planning authorities may request once planning permission has been granted. This will include a Biodiversity Gain Plan, as well as a Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP) and/or a Landscape and Ecological Management Plan (LEMP)

Key Benefits of Service

  • Calculations can be undertaken any time of the year (subject to a habitat survey being undertaken in optimal timing/conditions)
  • BNG calculations can be undertaken early on in your project to avoid delays
  • Identify measures required to deliver at least 10% BNG
